Care of Your Hair

Several folks have asked me about my hair care.  I am a licensed Cosmetologist and you might imagine that I have a fancy hair routine.  Not true.  Over the years I have tried a bit of everything with my hair.  It has been colored, cut, permed and left alone.  The upkeep and cost involved with coloring my hair was not something I have ever been comfortable with.  Also, the act of covering up what was essentially ME, rubbed me the wrong way.  Comments such as "you will look older", "you won't be hired", "your skin will look pale" were tossed at me.  For some reason, comments like that would fuel my fire for leaving what God designed for me, alone.  This year I will turn 50 years of age.  Four or maybe now FIVE years ago I set out to little by little grow out the semi/demi permanent color that was in my hair.  I did not wish to cut my long hair off so I just let it grow and periodically my husband or daughter would trim some off.  The end of last year (2012) my daughter cut off the last of the color and I am now ME.  I love it.  No worry about when I will need to touch up my roots.  OH NO!  A party invite - OH DEAR!  I have roots!  Nope, just ME.  Never did I realize how much of a relief this would be.  It left me with another predicament however.  Care of my hair.  I now have gray/white in the front and mostly dark hair in the back.  Each a slightly different texture.  With all the coloring (every 3 weeks) I would notice SO much hair in the bottom of the shower or in my comb as I combed out the tangles in the
shower ESPECIALLY on color days.  This was greatly reduced when I stopped coloring!  It was about this time that I read about CO (Conditioner Only) washing.  Some years back I tried this and it worked rather well but I had moved away from it.  There is plenty of information out there on this method of washing the hair.  Google Conditioner Only hair washing or CO hair washing and see what comes up.  I only use shampoo on my hair a few times a month when necessary.  You get the feel for when you need it.  The rest of the time I use Conditioner Only.  You wet your hair when you get into the shower...massage your scalp in the warm water to loosen the dirt.  Apply the conditioner (LOTS - you will need a lot especially if you have long hair) and massage that into the scalp and squeeze through ends.  (Do not pile hair on top of your head and tangle up your ends people!  The ends are not as dirty as the hair on the top of your head.  Just squeeze the conditioner into the ends.  Then gently comb out your  tangles with a wide toothed comb working up from the bottom slowly.  Let the conditioner sit on your hair as you wash your body, shave your legs etc.  This will give it time to dissolve the oils and dirt from your hair.  Rinse out.  I have found that if I add more conditioner (less than what you will need the first time) and work it through quickly and rinse out a 2nd time before exiting the shower that I have an even better result.  As you might imagine, this uses a lot of product.  This would be rather expensive with a salon brand of shampoo and conditioner.  I use Mane 'n Tail (Original Formula) Shampoo and Conditioner.  These are available in HUGE 32 oz bottles and work very well for me.  I wrap my head in a huge ShamWow towel!  (Not the leather shami )  Example of Shami Towel   When I am ready to comb out my hair I use the Shami Towel to absorb/squeeze out the excess water from my tresses.  (Never rub your lovely tresses with the towel.  Being rough with your hair - especially when your hair is wet - will cause breakage.  Gently squeeze your hair in the towel or cloth/non-leather shami)  Then I take a dime sized amount of the same Mane 'n Tail conditioner and use as a hair dressing (I keep this away from my roots).  This gives more texture and control to my fine hair without weighing it down.  Once in a while I will use the Mane 'n Tail Daily Strengthening treatment.  This will add shine and feed the hair.  I cannot use the Strengthener daily.
Though this says "Daily", too much of a good thing is TOO MUCH of a good thing.  It will make my hair feel harder and brittle in some way.  If I use it only once a week or so, it adds what does in fact feel like "strength" and shine.  Most days, after using the bit of Mane 'n Tail (Original) Conditioner as a hair dressing.  I will spray the Mane 'n Tail "Shine On" into my hands (I do not spray directly onto my hair)  I flip my hair over and scrunch it into my hair from the ends up but avoiding roots.  I also gently smooth onto areas that need a bit more shine - the gray around my face or tops of curls to catch the light.   (Applied with my fingers not sprayed directly onto head) I will then style my hair either by letting the wave dry as it is or by clipping up sections of hair.  This is beginning to look like an ad for Mane 'n Tail.  I am not affiliated with the company, but I am proud to speak about both the effectiveness of their products along with the affordability!  Mane 'n Tail has been around as long as I can remember.  They are a company that you can count on.  So far, I have not had to worry about my favorite product being discontinued.  I hope my favorite products will be around as long as I need them!  I love the faint cherry smell of the Strengthener and the Shine.  If you do not care for the scent, be assured it fades out quickly and won't interfere with your perfume.  The Conditioner and Shampoo (Original) has a very faint scent and both are pleasant.   This process has taken me from losing tons of hair in the shower to very few strands coming out.  I can easily count the number of strands now versus having enough over the course of a week to make a wig!  Thank you for asking and for reading my posts.  It is my hope that in some way my words will help someone.  Please write with any questions.

Portable USB Rechargeable Heated Eyelash Curler

Innovative, cool, sleek and portable USB RECHARGEABLE eyelash curler!  YAY!  This can recharge via the USB port on your laptop computer, or, you can use your Iphone wall adapter.  (Just unplug the cord and plug in your eyelash curler where the Iphone cord connects - then plug into the wall).

I have written in the past about several eyelash curlers and I have run through the streets singing the praises of one in particular.  However, even my favorite lash curler had a drawback of size/portability and loss of heat.  After curling one set of lashes I would need to put the curler back onto the base unit and reheat it.  The curler itself is not heat productive.  This little gem shown in the first photo takes care of that problem and fits into the palm of your hand.  It is about the same size as a USB storage/jump drive stick.  The idea of the battery being rechargeable is a long time in coming.  This will hold constant heat once you turn it on and allow it to heat up (about 30 seconds or so).  The switch is secure with indicator lights for charging (you will know when it is charged when the red light switches to green.  This unit seems very well made and comes with a secure cap for the wand and another cap to cover the USB plug (Remember to press buttons in on each side to remove bottom cover for recharging.  If I recall correctly, I believe the part that holds the heat is ceramic.  The directions are clearly written and the sturdy packaging snaps apart - you will not need to perform excision with scissors to get this out of the package.  I'm proud to own this and I think you will be too.

Will this portable curler take the place of your favorite Luminous Lash electric curler (AKA Hot Lashes)?  No.  If you are a makeup artist, stick with the Luminous Lash curler but grab one of these rechargeables for your pocket to touch up your models during a photo shoot!  The Luminous Lash system locks in a
distinct curl that will last until you wet your eyes. However, when I use this portable/rechargeable lash curler I get a more natural look to my lashes.  The curl is rounded and less sharp and it does stay in all day but the initial tightness will be somewhat less.  Keep in mind that I do not apply mascara with any of the curlers.  I use a lash curler in place of mascara.  Lately, I will use these two curlers in combination to achieve a more natural result.  Also, the heat from the rechargeable curler is a constant heat where the Luminous curler cools off quickly once removed from the base that heats it.  The packaging on the rechargeable lash curler states that the battery will hold a charge for 30 minutes of use.  I have used it steadily since I received it and I find that it doesn't quite keep the charge for a full week. I don't think I was curling for 30 minutes straight.  That just tells me that I will want to plug it in while I shower mid-week or so.  I LOVE this curler.  These will make fantastic gifts and come in several color choices.  Mine was purchased from ebay and the seller has kindly provided me the link to her store on Ebay where you can check it out and   purchase one of your own to add to your makeup bag.  Get one for your mom for Mother's Day!  You can buy her the pink one!  They are about $24.00 USA and currently FREE Shipping!  A high quality USB RECHARGEABLE, affordable and unique Lash Curler

CRAZY Dry Skin and Annoying Scar

This particular post is long overdue.  Every time I had my thoughts together, I would need to shift directions and start over.  The reason for this constant redirection was my fickle skin this winter season along with a stubborn set of scars on my cheek.  One of these scars was a result of hitting my face on our iron stove that we used for heating the family room (don't ask).  The second was right next to the first scar and a result of a zit that I just *couldn't* leave be (don't ask).  The two scars seemed to merge creating a dent on the part of the cheek that the light skims across that made the scar look even deeper as a result of the shadow.  I still remember my son saying from across the room, "Mom, what's wrong with your face?"  Sadness.  It got to the point where I started to forget I ever had a zit there or ever injured my face and went crazy searching the Internet sure that it must be something terrible happening to my skin.  Along with this scar issue, I was having a terrible time with flaky skin on my face and neck.  Nothing worked anymore.  Not my precious coconut oil, not my cocoa butter, nothing.   Initially, the coconut oil would work but, by the afternoon my skin would feel so tight that just turning my neck left or right would tingle and itch.  It was as if anything I tried sat on top and never penetrated the skin at all.  Every day I would try my Clarisonic brush (pictured above) to see if that would remove the dry skin.  After a while, I realized that the Clarisonic was making things worse. *I am not disparaging Clarisonic.  It is a great device.  I have used my Clarisonic with great success at other times but, my current condition was aggravated by the use of this brush.

When I was just about ready to give up, I remembered a tube of Strivectin that I had purchased earlier in the summer to try on my scars.  The Strivectin did improve the look of my scars.  No longer was my son asking about the dent in my face.  I knew it was still there but, definitely smoother and less obvious.  My progress seemed to stall however, and it seemed the Strivectin had done all it could to help my situation.  Now, I returned to my precious 100% organic coconut oil.  I would apply the coconut oil and massage it into the scar.  Then, I would cut a piece of cloth medical tape into the "eye shape" shown in photo below.  I would pull the scar area flat and hold it that way while placing the tape onto the area while applying pressure for a bit.  This was done every night before bed and sometimes I left it on the following day.  This helped to flatten the scars a bit more.  Even my husband noticed the improvement.  Then progress came to a halt along with the arrival of a strange rash around my eyes.  I still have NO idea of what caused the rash around both eyes.  The rash would worsen with tears and burn if I applied any sort of cream to the area.  I decided then to stop everything on my face.  Now, what was I going to do.  My skin still dry, flaky, and tight?  This long story has now circled back around to my original reason for writing.  The tube of Strivectin!  I dug the Strivectin back out and starting using it on the scars AND the rest of my face, along with my neck.  I started to see additional  improvement in the scar, curious!  I still tape the scars at night.  Along with continued improvement in the scars, the flaky, dry, itchy skin was going away AND the rash around my eyes.  I use the Strivectin morning and night.  but I keep some downstairs to dab on the scar in the middle of the day for a 3rd treatment to that area.  Within 2 weeks my dry skin issue has disappeared.  Some folks claim sensitivity to the Strivectin.  So far, I have not had a problem with it and I do not buy the one made for the face either.  I buy the tube that says for stretchmarks but it also lists help for wrinkles on the tube.  There is a minty type feel to it which may account for some folks reactions but, I find that tingle refreshing.  Right after I apply it my skin pinks up but then the pink subsides.  All I can say is that I am so much more comfortable in my own skin again.  I spoke to my daughter about this plateau type stalling in results.  She also uses the Strivectin on some scarring and she found the same thing.  If she takes a break from it now and again she will see additional results with reference to scarring.  Thankfully, the dry skin issue seems to be taken care of by just using the Strivectin daily morning and night.  I use no other moisturizer on my face except for some 100% cocoa butter stick on  my neck after the Strivectin settles in.  I apply a bit of Chapstick (of all things) to the outer corners of my eyes to protect the skin from my tears (the tears seem to encourage the return of my eye rash).

Originally, I wanted to blog about my use of the medical tape to help flatten my scars and then realized I must sing the praise of the Strivectin.  I feel SO much better in my skin that I have not even been wearing foundation!  Those of you that follow my posts will know that I prefer a "less is more" approach when it comes to makeup.  It pleases me so much and shortens my routine to skip steps in the morning.  I have also found that if I am going out and I reapply the Strivectin (instead of freshening up makeup) I look rested and refreshed!  I will update my post if anything changes.  Strivecton has earned my vote of confidence.  I hope they continue to make it exactly this same way and that I continue to have good results from it.  Usually, I do not like putting things on my skin that are not 100% natural but, in this case I make an exception.  I do hope they do not find out it is bad for us!

On my next medical checkup I will also have the doctor check out my scars just to be sure they are not something other than what I am treating.  I did have a Physician's Assistant check them out though and she seemed to feel they were just scars.  I only mention this to say - we should not self diagnose.

The photo shows an example of my cloth tape method.  I cut it into the shape of an eye and make it large enough to cover both scars.  The 2 scars are side by side.  The skin is pulled tight so that the scar is flattened and then I apply the tape and hold pressure for a few seconds or more.  Each morning I cut a piece of tape for that evening's use.  This way there is never a time where I am too tired to bother with treating my scars at night.

If anyone tries this and has any additional information please contact me.  I would love to hear your ideas!  I would also like to caution you from purchasing Strivectin from a place other than an authorized dealer.  My daughter ended up with a fake once.  It seems everything is being faked these days so, be careful out there!

Citrus-flavored melt-in-your mouth gelato in spray form. A smooth but zesty mingling of exotic fruits — think of this one as an updated invigorating splash of eau. Oh!
Notes: Clementine, grapefruit, mandarin

Next up for sale is Conaffetto Perfume Oil:

Hilde Soliani Conaffetto Perfume oil.  This is difficult to find in the USA.  I originally ordered mine from a lovely blogger, who ordered hers from Italy directly from Hilde.  Since then I have ordered 2 more directly from Italy to the tune of 95.00 per bottle.  If you are interested in one please let me know and make an offer.  I have one that hardly used and I also have one that has not been used at all.  These typically do not have stickers/labels but the bottles are all consistent in style...small roll on bottles with POTENT contents.  I have found the Conaffetto oil to be true to the perfume EDP sold at LuckyScent.  LuckyScent does not sell the oil.  Here is a photo of one of my bottles:  The description from luckyScent.com for the EDP that they sell at 200 per bottle is:

Conaffetto
Eau de Parfumby Hilde Soliani

The Scoop
A delightful, romantic filigree of almonds, sugar and soaringly lovely orange blossom. Created for a dear friend’s wedding, Soliani was inspired by “confetti” – the sugar coated almond candies served at weddings in Italy – and around the world. You may know them better as Jordan almonds. This is not an easy, melt-in-your-mouth sort of candy. The sugarcoating is to convey the wish that the newlyweds’ life be more sweet than bitter and the beauty of these candies is that the almonds really do have a sharp bitterness that contrasts with the powdery sweetness. That beguiling contradiction is captured perfectly in this scent and leads into an absolutely gorgeous profusion of fresh orange blossoms, as if you were walking under a wedding bower. Conafetto features an absolutely radiant version of fleur d’oranger – a touch of honey, a touch of citrus and a bounty of ethereal white flowers. We can’t imagine a more perfect scent for a wedding – but you don’t need to be a bride to love this. Any time you want to dab on a dose of sheer joy, this would be appropriate.
Conaffetto Notes
Orange blossom, almond, sugar

I have a sealed bottle of:

Alessandro
Eau de Toiletteby Mazzolari

Alessandro - 100ml

I purchased this at Lucky Scent at Christmas thinking I needed a spare - truth is - I think I got ahead of myself.  This sells for 175.00 plus shipping from Lucky Scent and I believe they are the site that carry this in the USA.  I will accept offers on this beauty that I never opened it and still have original invoice etc.  Contact me via this site or www.makeupalley.com  CaraMaria is my username.  :0)

The Scoop from LuckyScent.com
Bitter almond, sweet honey and a soft powdery notes give Alessandro a dreamy, rich quality that zips you away to a bedroom filled with satin sheets, candles and exotic candies. Almond and honey are the initial temptresses, beguiling your nose with their sweet charms. As the golden almond scent softens, it develops a lovely powdered almond feel…gentle and embracing. At the base is a vanilla-like warmth with a kiss of sophistication. Elegant, a bit dry, and utterly captivating, Alessandro is considered by many to be their 'holy grail' of fragrances.
Alessandro Notes
almond, honey, vanilla

My Favorite Place to Buy My Coconut Oil and Vitamins!

It is time that I told you about Coconut Oil.  There are many health benefits of using coconut oil in place of other oils.  It also tastes great, smells great and is CHEAP!  Thing is – you need organic and virgin coconut oil so that the health benefits remain in the oil ready to be utilized by your body!  Bleaching, removing the scent etc. also removes the *good stuff* from the oil.  Here is a link to where I buy my coconut oil – there are many brands to choose from but be sure you chose Organic AND Virgin (I think it is Cold Pressed).  The online shop that I use WITH FREE SHIPPING ALWAYS! Is located here:

Pure Formulas Website  (Put NUT1000 in the search box when you get to the site and you will see the brand I most frequently buy but there are many others.)

If you place an order or plan to – register first – this way you earn points…the points go towards $ off future purchases once you collect enough of them.  Along with that…each order that I have placed arrived with a coupon code for 10% off my next order that is valid for a nice amount of time.  Use NEXT10 in the discount code box during checkout and you will get 10% off now.  Around my area – if I can find the virgin coconut oil etc….it is way more $ for even a small size jar….plus, the gas used finding it and tax etc.  NO TAX, FREE  shipping on any size order…plus 10% off….equals way cheaper!  PLUS, that fact that I mentioned earlier about your orders racking up points towards future purchases.  They sell all kinds of vitamins etc.  I got my last shipment of vitamin B here much CHEAPER and FREE shipping…did I mention FREE SHIPPING  …OH, and it was priority shipping.  I still can’t believe they sent me my coconut oil for 7 bucks and change and spent more than 5 to ship it to me…I don’t think they made more than a buck?  Anyway…great service and great site.  I should blog about them on my blog…hmmm…I think I will!

One of my favorite ways to enjoy coconut oil is in my coffee!  I use a bit less than one teaspoon in my coffee and stir.  Sometimes I will use one of those hand blenders and it creates a frothy and wonderful cup of coffee!

I also use coconut oil for my hair, wash my face with it and apply daily as a body moisturizer.  Recently, I have noticed that my eyelashes are darker, thicker and longer.  Normally I do not use mascara and only curl my lashes with the Heated Lash curler mentioned in a previous blog post of mine.  I have not been using eyelash conditioners (or mascara for that matter) lately as I seem to have developed some sensitivities with my eyes.  The only product that has touched my face has been the coconut oil.  For this reason I can only assume that the coconut oil has something to do with my new lusher lashes!

Even my cat loves coconut oil.  She will practically knock me over to get to my jar if she smells coconut oil upon the air when I open the lid!  I do not know if cats receive any benefits from coconut oil but it sure has not hurt her any the few times that she has had it for a treat (just a dab at a time)!

HEALTH Benefits of coconut oil:

and this was interesting along with the folks comments that posted at the bottom of the article:

I hope this information is helpful and that maybe it will help with any skin issues that you might be experiencing.  I do not have psoriasis so I cannot vouch for benefits for that particular skin condition, however, many posts on the Internet along with my sister in law can vouch for the help it offers them with their psoriasis.

NOTE:  I am not affiliated with PureFormulas.com and I was not paid for this post.
